A recent post on social media shows two Royal Caribbean guests lying on a mattress while enjoying their balcony. Supposedly, the guests were onboard Allure of the Seas while docked in Perfect Day at CocoCay when they decided to move their cabin’s mattresses out to their balcony for some light reading. If you’re a light sleeper — or you like to sleep in — then a balcony room actually might have a disadvantage. You see, with one of these cabins the end of your room is essentially a wall of windows with a glass door that leads out.

Note the white balcony fronts on the last two cabins on several decks. Tis is the obstruction, and is noted on the deck plans as a gray balcony, as opposed to white, and the cabins are classified as Bella for this reason. In addition, others pointed out that balconies are often misty with moisture in the evenings from the sea, even when it doesn’t rain. “The next guests are going to love the humidity and sea air in their mattress," said one responder. Of course, the post was not well received by everyone and many were totally against the idea for a multitude of reasons.

That’s not to say you can’t find larger balconies on the ship — there are some large enough in some high-end cabins to have their own hot tub — but in general the space is modest. The largest suites sleep up to eight and wrap around the side of the ship with 772 square feet of outdoor space. You can hold a party at your outdoor bar or sit down to an alfresco, room-service dinner. Along with this guest, another cruiser commented on their own personal experience of actually sleeping on their balcony by moving cabin furniture. We all understand that a balcony cabin is also going to come with a higher price tag. What you might not realize is that the increase can vary widely. Pricing will vary ship by ship and even down to the specific cruise.

The cruise line will assign you a cabin prior to your sail date. Traditionally, there are dividers on either side of you, meaning that you won’t have your neighbor staring at you if you both decide to sit outside at the same time. For our Bahamas cruise on Adventure of the Seas, we booked a guaranteed balcony stateroom. A few weeks prior to sailing, the cruise line assigned us cabin 7232 located on the starboard side of the ship. Reviewing the deck plans, this balcony is considered a Spacious Ocean View Balcony (a 4B Category stateroom).
Many people book them for a feeling of privacy and to enjoy peaceful moments gazing out at the ship's wake. Corner cabins are a particular bonus, delivering long, wraparound outdoor spaces. Royal Caribbean sought to level the playing field on its Quantum Class ships by creating Super Studio balcony cabins. A favorite destination among Royal Caribbean cruise guests, this private island has everything you need to enjoy the ultimate beach day.
You'll have more privacy than with typical balcony cabins, since no one can see you from above or the side — but that's not the main draw. With all balcony cabins, you can just throw on your bathrobe to catch views of wildlife or of your ship pulling into port. Keep in mind when you step outside that your balcony might not be entirely private — your neighbors might be able to see you (as will the ship's security team via hidden cameras). The photo was apparently taken while Allure of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas were both docked at Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, on March 13.
Most opponents felt as though moving the mattress out to the balcony was a hazard to cleanliness. Adventure abounds in Labadee, also a Royal Caribbean private destination. For seven days, it provided just enough space to hold all our clothes between the hangers and several shelves off to one side. Upon entering the room, the closet and desk area were to our left (forward) with the bed closer to the balcony. On the day bookings went on sale, we had a travel agent secure a guaranteed (GTY) cabin for us on the first sailing on June 12th.
